Missy Pfohl Smith is a choreographer, performer, and educator serving as Director of the Program of Dance and Movement and the Institute for the Performing Arts at the University of Rochester. She founded and leads the acclaimed contemporary dance company BIODANCE, known for its innovative, socially conscious work and sold-out performances regionally and internationally.
- Education: BS in Dance (College at Brockport), MFA in Choreography and Performance (Sarah Lawrence College)
Her research and creative practice focuses on contemporary modern dance, somatics, interdisciplinary collaborations, and dance as a tool for social justice. She has developed academic programs including two BA degrees in dance, a dance minor, and a movement studies minor, while fostering community engagement through courses with elders and women in recovery.
Notable grants include funding from the New York State Council on the Arts, the Max and Marian Farash Foundation, and the Rochester Area Community Foundation. She has collaborated with digital media artist W. Michelle Harris and organized the annual inspireDANCE Festival and inspireJAM bboy/bgirl battles.
