Dr. Mirwais Qaderi is a Professor in the Department of Biology at Mount Saint Vincent University, where he directs the Physiological Plant Ecology Lab. He holds a BSc and MSc from Kabul University, an MSc and PhD from the University of Western Ontario, and completed postdoctoral research at the University of Calgary. His research examines plant responses to climate change factors including temperature, CO2, drought, and light quality.
His lab investigates how environmental stressors affect plant physiology, with particular focus on methane emissions from plants under abiotic stress. Research employs model plants and crops to understand biochemical pathways activated by climate variables. Recent work explores interactive effects of temperature, light quality, and nutrients on growth, metabolism, and methane release in economically important species like canola and pea plants.
Publications consistently demonstrate expertise in plant stress physiology and climate interactions. Recent articles examine nitrogen assimilation under climate change, photoperiod effects on methane emissions, and environmental regulation of secondary metabolites. His research provides critical insights for crop resilience and climate mitigation strategies.
He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in plant physiology and environmental biology while mentoring students in the Physiological Plant Ecology Lab. His research has received continuous external funding for over two decades, supporting investigations into plant adaptation mechanisms.
