Jessica A. Torrion is an Associate Professor of Crop Physiology at Montana State University, concurrently serving as Department Head of the Department of Research Centers and Superintendent of the Northwestern Agricultural Research Center (NWARC). Her research focuses on improving crop productivity and resilience under abiotic stresses, particularly in cereals, oil crops, pulses, and forages. She holds a Ph.D. in Cotton Crop Water Stress Analysis from Texas Tech University (2008) and conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln on soybean physiology.
- Roles: 25% research, 65% administration, 5% teaching
- Expertise: Irrigation management, crop physiology, environmental impacts on yield
Her work emphasizes sustainable agriculture practices, including optimizing nitrogen and water use, and developing stress-tolerant crop varieties. She has led studies on canola frost tolerance, pea protein concentrations, and wheat end-use quality. Engagements include roles as Technical Editor for Agronomy Journal and Associate Editor for Crop Science Journal.
Recent research highlights include evaluating seeding rates in canola, nitrogen impacts on wheat quality, and the viability of Kernza in Montana. She advises graduate students in plant sciences and agronomy, with a focus on precision agriculture and crop physiology.
