Prof. Dr. Mirko Uhlig serves as Junior Professor in the Department of Cultural Anthropology/European Ethnology at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, within the Faculty of Philosophy and Philology and the Institute of Film, Theatre, Media and Cultural Studies. His academic work bridges theoretical frameworks with practical field research methodologies.
His research interests span a diverse range of cultural phenomena including intangible cultural heritage in rural areas, remembrance practices and popular culture (particularly reenactments), custom and ritual transformations, health and spirituality research focusing on meaning-making in precarious life situations, heterodox cultures (conspiracy theories and 'esotericism'), and legal anthropology examining legal norms in everyday life and popular culture representations of law. His methodological expertise includes ethnographic film and field research techniques.
Professor Uhlig currently leads the BMEL joint project 'Intangible Cultural Heritage in Rural Areas' (IKEL) running from 2023 to 2026, along with previously directing projects such as 'The Hanselfingerhut Game in Forst' and DFG-funded research on spiritual healing in rural areas. He serves as a member of the UNESCO 'Expert Committee on Intangible Cultural Heritage' and provides editorial support for the journal Curare (Journal of Medical Anthropology).
For the Summer semester 2025, he is teaching MA-level courses on 'Readers of the Dead? Paths into the Professional Field of Forensic Medicine. A Contribution to Work Culture and Biography Research,' examining why individuals choose forensic medicine careers and how cultural values shape perceptions of death and medical authority. His media presence includes podcast appearances discussing traditions and features on shamanism in Germany.
