Miriam Spering is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of British Columbia (UBC), part of the Faculty of Arts. She holds affiliations with the Graduate Program in Neuroscience, the Institute for Computing, Information, and Cognitive Systems (ICICS), the Djavad Mowafaghian Center for Brain Health (DMCBH), and the Edwin S. H. Leong Center for Research in Healthy Aging (ELCHA). Her research focuses on how visual information guides movement control, using advanced technologies like eye tracking and motion capture.
Education: MSc (Ruprecht-Karls University Heidelberg, 2002), PhD (Justus-Liebig University Giessen, 2006), Postdoc (NYU, 2010), and Registered Clinical Counsellor (BCACC, 2024).
Research interests include vision, multisensory integration, eye/hand movements in health and disease. Recent articles explore perception-action dissociations, ocular following mechanisms, and Parkinson’s-related eye movement deficits. Awards include NSERC Accelerator Award (2018) and Humboldt Award (2021).
Lab: UBC EyeLab uses ultra-fast displays, eye tracking, and motion capture to study sensorimotor control in athletes and clinical populations. Mentored students and secured grants including Killam Research Fellowship. Active in equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives within UBC Psychology.
