Dr. Miriam Riedinger is an Acting Professor at the Department of English and Linguistics, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU). She holds a PhD in Linguistics (2024) and prior degrees from the University of Trier and Philipps University of Marburg. Her research focuses on phoneme perception at the interface of phonetics and phonology, employing EEG and behavioral methods to investigate vowel processing in German and other languages. She explores phonological theories like underspecification and feature hierarchy, alongside perceptual salience of vowel characteristics.
- Academic Roles: Acting Professor (2024–2025), Research Associate (2017–2024), Doctoral Student (2017–2024).
- Teaching: Leads seminars on neurolinguistics, psycho- and neurolinguistics, and experimental methods in language science.
- Affiliations: Member of the Gutenberg-Nachwuchskolleg Leadership Board (2020–2023) and former Junior Representative of the Gutenberg Academy (2020–2021).
Her research highlights neural and behavioral asymmetries in vowel perception, emphasizing the interplay between phonological structure and acoustic cues. Recent work includes studies on vowel discrimination in native speakers and learners, published in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience and edited volumes on language assessment.
