Prof. Miriam Oesterreich is a Professor of Design Theory/Gender Studies at the Berlin University of the Arts since 2021. Her research focuses on Latin American art history, indigenism, transcultural transfer, and gender studies. She previously held roles as an Athene Young Investigator, postdoctoral fellow at TU Darmstadt, and research associate at Heidelberg University. Her work examines topics such as Mexican indigenismo as avant-garde art practice and the staging of 'exotic' bodies in 19th-century advertising. She has taught globally at institutions including the Universities of Heidelberg, Havana, Valencia, and the Free University of Berlin.
Education: Studies in Art History, Romance Studies, and Ancient American Studies across multiple universities. Fellowships include the Transregional Academy in São Paulo (2016) and Buenos Aires (2017). She co-edits the journal Miradas – Journal for the Arts and Culture of the Américas and the Iberian Peninsula.
Research projects include A Critical Art History of International and World Expositions and collaborations on topics like fashion, modernity, and border politics. Her teaching emphasizes critical diversity, with courses addressing gender, ethnicity, and anti-discrimination. Office hours are held digitally and in person at the Media Center.
Awards include the TU Darmstadt Research Award and the Ansel Adams Fellowship. She has organized events such as the Patriarchy of Things conversation (2021) and participated in global academic initiatives like the DFG Research Training Group Knowledge of the Arts.
