Miranda Reed serves as a Professor and Interim Department Head in the Department of Drug Discovery and Development at Auburn University's Harrison College of Pharmacy. Her academic career spans over 15 years with progressive appointments from Assistant Professor at West Virginia University to her current full Professorship at Auburn University.
Education:
- B.A. in Psychology from Auburn University (2002)
- M.S. in Experimental Psychology from Auburn University (2005)
- Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from Auburn University (2007)
- Postdoctoral Fellowship in Neuroscience and Neurology at University of Minnesota (2007-2010)
Professor Reed's research focuses on understanding how alterations in synapses and glutamatergic signaling lead to learning and memory deficits, as well as neurodegeneration. Her laboratory pursues four primary research lines: investigating the long-term consequences of prenatal cannabinoid exposure, studying synaptic alterations in aging and Alzheimer's disease, examining hyperexcitability's role in neurodegeneration, and developing sensitive behavioral tasks for cognitive impairment assessment. Her work integrates behavioral, electrochemical, electrophysiological, cellular and molecular methodologies to identify therapeutic targets.
Analysis of Professor Reed's publications reveals a consistent focus on glutamatergic signaling in neurodegenerative conditions, particularly Alzheimer's disease. Her research demonstrates an evolution from basic mechanisms of synaptic dysfunction to translational studies identifying potential therapeutic interventions. A significant portion of her recent work explores the intersection of cannabinoid exposure, Alzheimer's pathology, and cognitive decline, often in collaboration with other researchers at Auburn University.
Scientific Recognition:
- Principal Investigator on NIH/NIDA R01 DA046723 grant
- Recipient of NIH administrative diversity supplement
- Auburn University Presidential Award for Innovative Research
- Center for One Health Research Seed Grant
- Multiple internal Auburn University research grants
Professor Reed has mentored over 60 undergraduates, with more than 90% pursuing professional or graduate programs. She serves as a faculty mentor in the McNair Scholars Program and is a founding member of Auburn University's Commission for Gender Equity and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. Her laboratory includes multiple graduate students working on various aspects of her research programs. She has established collaborations with researchers across campus and has secured significant funding to support her research on cognitive decline, Alzheimer's disease, and the effects of prenatal cannabinoid exposure.
