Minglang Zhou is a Professor of Chinese at the University of Maryland's School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, and a member of the Maryland Language Science Center. He holds a Ph.D. in Linguistics from Michigan State University (1993). His research focuses on sociolinguistics, language policy, bilingual education, and minority languages in China. He has authored influential books such as Multilingualism in China (2003) and Language Ideology and Order in Rising China (2019), and edited six volumes on language policy and education.
His work examines China's language policies, particularly regarding ethnic minorities, and their implications for national identity and globalization. Recent publications include analyses of language standardization, the pressure on minority languages under Xi Jinping's policies, and the global projection of Chinese linguistic influence.
Zhou serves on editorial committees for multiple journals and has received grants such as a 2009 American Philosophical Society fellowship for his project on minority language education in China. His research bridges sociolinguistic theory with policy analysis, offering critical insights into language as a tool of state-building and cultural power.
