Professor Mimi Zou is the Head of School at the School of Private & Commercial Law, University of New South Wales. She holds degrees from the University of Sydney (B.Ec SocSci with Medal & Hons 1, LLB Hons 1) and the University of Oxford (BCL with Distinction, DPhil). Her research focuses on AI and blockchain law, technology regulation, and their implications for commercial and private law. She has held senior roles globally, including Chair in Commercial Law at the University of Exeter and a pioneering Fellowship in Chinese Law at Oxford. She founded Oxford’s first lawtech lab and advises UK government bodies on technology governance.
Her research interests include the regulatory challenges posed by emerging technologies, digital assets, and ethical AI practices. Notable contributions include co-editing the Cambridge Handbook of Generative AI and the Law (2025) and leading projects on legal innovation and tech-based dispute resolution. She has secured significant grants, including a £500,000 project on Deep Tech Dispute Resolution at Oxford and leadership in the £30M China Prosperity Fund Programme.
Zou has received prestigious awards including the 2024 Global Australian Award for Technology and the British Academy Talent Development Award. Her work has been featured in Financial Times, NY Times, and The Economist. She is a Visiting Fellow at Oxford, and advises international bodies like the G7 and World Economic Forum on tech governance.
