Mimi Schippers

Dr. Mimi Schippers is a Professor of Sociology at Tulane University's School of Liberal Arts. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and specializes in sexuality, gender theory, queer theory, and cultural sociology with particular focus on polyamory and non-monogamous relationships.

Her research examines:

• Cultural representations of non-monogamy in media and historical texts
• Queer challenges to mononormative relationship structures
• Intersections of gender, power, and sexuality
• Feminist and queer theoretical frameworks
• Polyqueer kinship formations

Current work analyzes portrayals of poly relationships in television, film, and journalism, including FLDS polygamy narratives and campus hookup cultures.

Her publications demonstrate consistent theoretical engagement with deconstructing mononormativity through queer and feminist lenses, examining how alternative relationship models challenge gender hegemony. Recent work increasingly focuses on media representations and the sociopolitical dimensions of consensual non-monogamy.
