Boka En is a researcher in the Gender Studies Department at the University of Vienna, holding the academic rank of Researcher. They specialize in Gender & Sexuality Studies, focusing on topics such as LGBTIQ* movements, emancipatory learning spaces, and the intersections of activism and academia. En is currently on leave from their role as a research coordinator at the Gender Research Office. They are a co-founder of the conference series Non-Monogamies and Contemporary Intimacies and the Inter*Trans_Nonbinary working group within the Austrian Society for Gender Studies. Since October 2024, En serves as the vice chair of the Austrian Society for Gender Studies.
En’s doctoral research explores inclusions and exclusions within LGBTQIA* movements, emphasizing boundaries between activism and academic knowledge production. Their educational background includes a BA (Hons) and MSc in Gender Research. They have taught at multiple Austrian universities, including the University of Vienna and the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, and received the University of Salzburg’s Teaching Award in 2016 for collaborative pedagogy.
Key research interests include queer theory, intersectionality, and the politics of gender diversity in education. En has published extensively on topics such as queer bodies in academia, non-monogamous relationships, and postsecularity in visual culture. En’s recent publications (2023–2025) address trans/non-binary activism in German-speaking countries, gender-sensitive language policies, and the role of credibility in LGBTQIQ* movements. They have also contributed to edited volumes on feminist methodologies and intersectionality.
En’s professional activities extend to workshop facilitation (e.g., for Astra Zeneca Austria and the Austrian Student Union) and translation work through their design collective Qwir text + design. They emphasize participatory teaching methods rooted in critical pedagogy, aiming to connect academic knowledge with lived experiences.
