Miles Brown is an Associate Professor of String Bass and Jazz at the University of Delaware's School of Music, part of the College of Arts & Sciences. He holds a Doctorate in Jazz Performance from the Eastman School of Music, a Master of Music from Mannes College of Music, and a Bachelor of Music in Music Education and Jazz from Eastman. His roles include teaching applied string bass, jazz history, jazz arranging, and global improvisation. Full-time faculty since Fall 2018.
Dr. Brown is a versatile musician with expertise in jazz performance, composition, and education. His career includes membership in the new music ensemble Alarm Will Sound, performances at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, and collaborations with artists like Regina Carter and Dave Ballou. Former roles include jazz program coordinator at Oakland University (2009–2018) and interim director of jazz at Cornell University (2008).
His research and creative work emphasize improvisation across cultural traditions, leveraging his extensive performance background and academic training. Teaching focuses on bridging classical and contemporary music practices.
