Milda Pucetaite is a Researcher and Principal Investigator at Lund University's Centre for Environmental and Climate Science (CEC) and BECC: Biodiversity and Ecosystem services in a Changing Climate. She specializes in Microbial Ecology and Functional Ecology, with a particular focus on soil microbiology and fungal systems.
Her research centers on applying cutting-edge analytical methodologies including vibrational microspectroscopy and synchrotron-based X-ray microscopy to investigate microbial processes at micro- to nanoscale. These studies address critical questions about carbon and nutrient cycling in soil ecosystems, with particular attention to how microorganisms adapt to environmental changes including climate change impacts.
Her recent work demonstrates strong trends in soil microstructure analysis, fungal chemical signaling, and the environmental impacts of microplastics on soil microbial communities. These studies employ advanced imaging and spectroscopy techniques to reveal processes at unprecedented spatial resolutions.
Scientific Recognition:
- The King Carl XVI Gustaf 50th Anniversary Fund for Science, Technology and Environment Award (2022)
Dr. Pucetaite leads multiple significant research projects including INTERSPEC (funded by European Commission - Horizon Europe) focused on tracing chemical signaling between soil fungi, and projects examining carbon cycling in arctic soil crusts. She also serves as supervisor for doctoral students investigating microbial interactions in soil. Her collaborative work extends internationally, including a visiting researcher position at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (2023-2025).
Her research contributes directly to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to environmental protection and climate action, with applications for understanding soil degradation and developing sustainable land management practices.
