Milan Shrestha is a Full Teaching Professor and Senior Global Futures Scientist at Arizona State University's School of Sustainability and Julie Ann Wrigley Global Futures Laboratory. His research integrates environmental anthropology and sustainability science to examine socio-cultural dimensions of environmental challenges, focusing on land-agriculture systems, glacier-related hazards, and climate adaptation in vulnerable regions like the Himalayas.
His interdisciplinary approach combines geospatial analysis with socio-economic data to study patterns of environmental change, including land fragmentation, urban growth, and disaster risks. Current projects investigate the climate-water-agriculture nexus, particularly community responses to glacial floods and institutional factors influencing adaptation strategies.
Publications demonstrate expertise in sustainable development, disaster risk management, and conservation ecology, with fieldwork across Nepal and Tibet. He has contributed to NSF-funded multidisciplinary initiatives on glacial lake outburst flood mitigation and serves on boards for the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies and the American Anthropological Association's Culture & Agriculture section.
Research outputs emphasize community-centered solutions, hydrological risk assessment, and interdisciplinary methodologies bridging natural and social sciences.
