Milan Allan

Milan Allan is an Associate Professor at the Leiden Institute of Physics (LION) within the Faculty of Science at Leiden University, Netherlands. He leads the Allan Lab, which specializes in experimental quantum matter physics, focusing on advanced microscopy techniques to probe exotic electronic states in quantum materials.

His research centers on understanding superconductivity and electronic correlations using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and quasiparticle interference (QPI) imaging. He also employs Low Energy Electron Microscopy (LEEM) to study moiré systems such as magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene, contributing to the development of novel characterization methods for 2D quantum materials.

The recent publications highlight a strong focus on visualizing emergent quantum phenomena, including flat bands in twisted graphene and identifying the role of antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations in iron-based superconductors. These works reflect a consistent trajectory toward understanding pairing mechanisms in unconventional superconductors and enabling quantum device engineering.

Dr. Allan supervises several PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers and is involved in collaborative projects with institutions such as IBM. He is actively contributing to next-generation physics experiments, including vibration damping systems for the underground Einstein Telescope.
