Milah Smith serves as a Faculty Instructor at City University, joining the faculty in July 2023 to teach Research Methods, Introduction to Counselling, and Systemic Theory: Diversity and Cultural Psychology. She holds a Master's in Counselling from CityU (2017) and integrates prior experience as a kinesiologist, rehabilitation specialist, and clinical counsellor into her academic practice.
Her research and clinical work centers on chronic pain, disability, trauma, and collective grief, with dedicated service to Queer, Trans, Neurodiverse, and Activist communities. Past projects examined physiological impacts of high-risk occupations like logging and backcountry ski guiding, alongside advocacy for youth aging out of foster care. Current initiatives include co-leading the Mental Health Liberation Fund for BIPOC counselling students and a pilot project organized by frontline land defenders.
Dr. Smith's teaching philosophy emphasizes collective healing and unlearning harmful systems through collaborative learning. She draws from diverse instructional backgrounds—including rock climbing instruction and teacher professional development—to foster solidarity and harm prevention in educational spaces, consistently advocating for systemic change in mental health services.
