Professor Mike Zundel is a Professor in the Department of Strategy, International Business and Entrepreneurship at the University of Liverpool Management School. He previously held significant leadership roles including Associate Dean for Research (2015-2019), Associate Dean Faculty (2019-2021), and interim head of his department (2020-2021). He served as the Otto Moensted Visiting Professor at Copenhagen Business School in 2021/2022 and maintains active editorial roles in top management journals such as Academy of Management Review and Organization Studies.
His research centers on processes of organizing amid technological transformations, drawing on philosophy of technology, media theory, and ecological thinking rooted in cybernetics and systems theory. He critically examines strategy, entrepreneurship, and organizational dynamics through lenses including digital platforms, robot-driven innovation, and institutional maintenance. His 2023 co-authored book The Poverty of Strategy: Organizing in the Shadows of Technology (Cambridge University Press) challenges conventional strategic frameworks by revealing technology's constitutive role in organizational processes.
Zundel's publication trends (2020-2025) demonstrate increasing integration of philosophical inquiry with organizational phenomena, particularly through Heideggerian and Batesonian frameworks. His work spans organizational memory, institutional logics, and digital platform ecologies, frequently appearing in premier journals like Organization Studies and Academy of Management Review. A notable trajectory involves applying ecological thinking to digital innovation and leadership contexts.
His scientific awards reflect exceptional editorial contributions:
- Developmental Reviewer Awards, Academy of Management Review (2020, 2021)
- Outstanding Reviewer Awards, Academy of Management Review (2023, 2024)
- Best Reviewer Award, Academy of Management Learning & Education (2020)
- Best Reviewer Award, International Journal of Management Reviews (2013)
Professor Zundel actively contributes to the Brett Centre for Organisational and Employee Wellbeing and the Entrepreneurship research group at Liverpool. His collaborative approach is evident in co-authored works with scholars like Robin Holt and Christian Garmann Johnsen, and his visiting professorship at Copenhagen Business School underscores his international research network. Current teaching includes modules on business as social science, entrepreneurship, and strategic management.
