Mike Schoonover, DVM, MS, is a Professor in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences at Oklahoma State University's College of Veterinary Medicine. He currently serves as the ACVS Equine Residency Program Director and Equine Surgery Service Chief at the Boren Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. Dr. Schoonover has held these leadership positions since 2014 and 2019 respectively, advancing to his current professorship in 2023 after previously serving as Associate Professor of Equine Surgery and Sports Medicine from 2018-2023.
Dr. Schoonover earned his DVM in 2000 and Master of Science in Veterinary Medicine in 2004, both from Oklahoma State University. He is board-certified as a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (since 2007) and the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (since 2013).
His research focuses on equine surgery, sports medicine, orthopaedics, biomechanics, and regenerative medicine. Dr. Schoonover's work particularly emphasizes pharmacokinetics of antibiotics in neonatal foals, amniotic allograft therapies for equine injuries, and innovative approaches to equine lameness and wound management. His recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on evidence-based approaches to equine surgical care and rehabilitation.
Analysis of his 15 most recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on translational research with direct clinical applications. His work on amikacin pharmacokinetics represents a significant contribution to understanding antibiotic delivery in equine patients, while his research on amniotic allografts has advanced regenerative medicine approaches for tendon, ligament, and joint injuries in horses.
Dr. Schoonover serves as a peer reviewer for major veterinary journals including the American Journal of Veterinary Research and Veterinary Surgery.
