Dr Mike Roberts is a Senior Research Fellow at the School of Photovoltaic and Renewable Energy Engineering (SPREE) and Research Co-ordinator at the Collaboration on Energy and Environmental Markets (CEEM) at UNSW Sydney. His research focuses on integrating distributed renewable energy into electricity systems through technical, economic, and policy approaches, particularly in areas like photovoltaics, demand response, energy storage, and community energy systems.
He holds a PhD in Renewable Energy Engineering (UNSW, 2019), a BSc Physics (University of Manchester, 1987), and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (Manchester Metropolitan University, 1989). Roberts has received the Dean’s Award for Outstanding PhD Thesis in 2019.
His professional roles include Chair (2023–2024) and Director (2018–2024) of the Australian PV Institute (APVI). His work spans technical analysis, qualitative user research, and policy development for a user-centered energy transition. Key research areas include distributed photovoltaics, virtual power plants, embedded networks, solar potential assessment, and energy resilience in residential and community contexts.
Roberts has authored over 50 publications across journals, conferences, and reports, with recent focus on optimizing PV deployment in apartment buildings, energy storage systems, and policy frameworks for renewable energy adoption.
