Dr Jose Bilbao is an academic at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), holding roles as a Research Fellow and more recently an Associate Lecturer. His research focuses on thermal and electrical modeling of photovoltaic (PV) and photovoltaic/thermal (PVT) modules, with expertise in degradation analysis, recycling strategies, and life cycle assessment of solar systems. He has contributed to advancing the integration of PV systems into smart grids, low-carbon buildings, and energy-efficient residential applications.
Education and Roles: Bilbao has been a postgraduate research fellow at UNSW since 2012 and transitioned to an Associate Lecturer role. His work spans multiple disciplines, including renewable energy systems engineering, sustainability, and building energy efficiency.
Research Interests: Bilbao’s key areas include PV performance modeling, PVT system optimization, and sustainable recycling of solar modules. His studies address thermal losses in PV layers, smart grid applications, and low-energy building designs. He has pioneered novel thermal models and explored innovations like ground-coupled PV/T desiccant cooling systems.
Publications & Trends: Over 50 publications span PV recycling, smart grid integration, and energy efficiency. Recent work emphasizes sustainability challenges, such as recycling processes and climate resilience in building systems. His research bridges theory and practice, with studies on residential energy storage and solar pool systems.
Projects & Collaboration: Bilbao contributes to the LCL CRC Project RP1011 on sustainable modular housing. His work involves interdisciplinary teams, as seen in collaborative publications on educational practices and energy policy analysis.
