معرفی
Professor Mike Murphy is a leading academic in mitochondrial redox biology at the University of Cambridge, affiliated with the MRC Mitochondrial Biology Unit and School of Clinical Medicine. His research explores mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) in pathology and signaling, with a focus on therapeutic interventions.
- Education: Chemistry (BSc, Trinity College Dublin); Biochemistry (PhD, University of Cambridge)
- Career: Lecturer at Trinity College Dublin; Associate Professor at University of Otago; Independent Research Group Leader at MRC MBU since 2001
Mike’s group investigates mitochondrial ROS production, its role in diseases like stroke and heart attack, and develops mitochondria-targeted antioxidants such as MitoQ. Recent work includes succinate metabolism in ischaemia-reperfusion injury and thiol proteomic techniques like Redox-DIGE and OxICAT.
Key publications span structural biology of mitochondrial complexes, redox proteomics, and metabolic therapeutics. His group’s findings underpin clinical trials for extending lifespan and treating ischemic injuries. Awards include the Keilin Medal and Fellowships from the Academy of Medical Sciences and Royal Society of New Zealand.
