Mike Macnair is an Associate Professor of Law at the University of Oxford and a Tutorial Fellow in Law at St Hugh's College. He retired from his role as Ann Smart Tutorial Fellow in 2022 but remains a Fellow by Resolution of St Hugh's. His research focuses on legal history, including equity law, procedural history, and the intersection of common and civil law traditions. He also applies Marxist theory to analyze law as a social and historical phenomenon.
Macnair teaches undergraduate and master’s courses in legal history, such as History of English Law and Roman and Civilian Law of Contracts. He has supervised doctoral and postgraduate theses in legal-historical topics. His academic journey includes studies at Magdalen College (BCL, D.Phil) and teaching roles at Leeds University, Southampton Solent University, and Lancaster University prior to joining St Hugh’s in 2000.
His research interests emphasize the historical development of legal principles and their societal implications. He is a key contributor to Volume IX of the Oxford History of the Laws of England, focusing on the period 1689–1760. His work critiques judicial power and explores the ‘limits of law’ through historical and Marxist lenses.
