Mike Heath is a Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Strathclyde, funded via the Marine Alliance for Science and Technology Scotland (MASTS). His work focuses on mathematical and statistical modelling of marine ecosystems, particularly fish population dynamics and climate change impacts. He holds a PhD in Marine Biology/Oceanography from the University College of North Wales, Bangor (1983).
Research highlights include leading EU/NERC-funded projects on North Atlantic zooplankton dynamics and advising Scottish Government on aquaculture/environment interactions. He co-leads the Transformative Research Actions for Resilient Coastal Communities (TRACC) project (2024-2028) and has pioneered the StrathE2E2 marine food web model. Key contributions include recovery of North Sea cod stocks through policy-informing models.
- Recipient of Royal Society of Edinburgh's Sir James Black Medal (2017)
- Co-developed synthetic sediment maps for Greenland/Barents Seas
- Active in fisheries displacement modeling and eco-economic consequence analysis
Teaching and supervision include accepting PhD students in marine modelling and ecosystem dynamics. His interdisciplinary work bridges mathematical sciences with environmental policy through 31 funded projects and 138+ publications.
