Professor Michael Heath is a leading researcher in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Strathclyde, Faculty of Science. He holds a research position supported by the Marine Alliance for Science and Technology Scotland (MASTS) and is actively engaged in advancing the mathematical and statistical understanding of marine ecosystems. His work bridges academia and policy, with significant contributions to fisheries science and environmental management.
Research Interests: His primary expertise lies in the modelling of marine ecosystems, with a focus on fish population dynamics, fisheries, climate change impacts, and ecosystem-based management. He investigates how environmental and anthropogenic factors affect marine species distributions, trophic interactions, and ecosystem status. His research integrates field observations with complex statistical and mathematical models.
The analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong trend toward climate-driven changes in marine systems, particularly in the North Atlantic and North Sea. His work frequently addresses fish distribution shifts, trophic cascades, and the ecological impacts of offshore infrastructure and climate change. He employs advanced modelling techniques to inform policy and conservation efforts.
Scientific Awards:
- Royal Society of Edinburgh, Sir James Black Medal (2017)
Advising and Grants: Professor Heath has supervised multiple PhD students and early-career researchers, including Jasmine Freeman and Jack Laverick. He is a Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator on numerous high-impact research projects such as TRACC (Transformative Research Actions for Resilient Coastal Communities), SEAwise (Shaping Ecosystem based Fisheries Management), and ECOWINGS (Ecosystem Change, Offshore Wind, Net Gain and Seabirds), funded by ESRC, NERC, and EU programs. His research has directly influenced policy, notably contributing to EU fisheries reforms that aided the recovery of North Sea cod stocks.
Labs and Teams: He is part of a strong interdisciplinary research group at Strathclyde, collaborating closely with Douglas Speirs, Neil Banas, and Jack Laverick. He contributes to the development of open-access ecosystem models like StrathE2E2 and engages in national and international research networks, including MASTS and EU-funded consortia.
