Mike-Frank Epitropoulos is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Sociology at the University of Pittsburgh, part of the Dietrich School of Arts & Sciences. He holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Pittsburgh (1999), an M.P.I.A. in Public & International Affairs (1991), and a B.A. in Economics (1989), all from Pitt. As a first-generation Ph.D., his research focuses on the sociology of tourism, political economy, and social movements, particularly in Greece and Cyprus. He directs Pitt’s study abroad programs in Greece and Cyprus and has extensive experience in international educational programming.
Epitropoulos has taught over 200 courses across U.S. and international institutions, emphasizing Public Sociology. His administrative roles include serving on the University Senate Athletic Committee and the Advisory Committee for the Admission of Student-Athletes. He has received numerous awards, including multiple Pitt MVP Professor accolades and the Barone Lecture Series Award (2016). His research and teaching integrate global crises, capitalism, and social justice.
His work spans articles on Greek socio-political dynamics, global economic crises, and the impact of tourism. He frequently contributes to public discourse via radio interviews and op-eds, addressing issues like the Greek economic crisis, U.S. politics, and climate change. Epitropoulos also engages in local governance, serving on Swissvale Borough Council and leading community development initiatives in Pittsburgh and Greece.
