Dr. Mike Edwards is a Lecturer and Director of Education in the School of Chemical and Physical Sciences at Keele University. He holds a MChem from the University of Bath and a PhD from the University of Bath under Prof. Jon Williams, followed by postdoctoral research at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and University of York. His research focuses on heterocyclic synthesis for medicinal applications, including anti-malarial agents, cancer therapeutics, and antioxidant mimetics. He is also actively involved in chemical education innovation, particularly in organic reaction mechanisms, medicinal chemistry curriculum development, and technology-enhanced learning.
Education Background:
- MChem (University of Bath)
- PhD in Transition Metal Catalysis (University of Bath)
Research Interests: His current projects include developing novel anti-malarial agents via heterocyclic templates, synthesizing thienopyridine derivatives as anti-proliferative agents targeting PLC-γ, and evaluating selenium-based GPx mimetics. These projects emphasize translational research with potential clinical applications.
Teaching Contributions: Leads over 12 modules across Forensic Science, Chemistry, and Medicinal Chemistry programs, including 'Science and Society', 'Principles of Drug Design', and research project supervision. His teaching integrates modern medicinal chemistry with forensic toxicology and practical laboratory skills.
Collaborations: Works with Tess Phillips, Paul Horrocks, and Jóhannes Reynisson on interdisciplinary projects. His work bridges organic synthesis with pharmacological applications, reflecting his dual focus on research and pedagogy.
