Dr Mike Bintley is Associate Professor in Medieval English Literature at the University of Southampton, specializing in transdisciplinary research at the intersection of textual analysis and material culture. His work examines medieval landscapes, plant-life, settlements, and cognitive frameworks through integrated literary and archaeological approaches. Bintley edits the 'Nature and Environment in the Middle Ages' book series and the journal Medieval Ecocriticisms.
Research explores representations of environment in Old English and Old Norse literature, with particular attention to arboreal symbolism and sacred landscapes. Award-winning scholarship includes the Beatrice White Prize for Settlements and Strongholds in Early Medieval England, recognizing contributions to understanding text-landscape relationships.
Current projects include a creative nonfiction work on early medieval landscapes (Eorð) and an anthology of arboreal motifs in early English poetry. Bintley's academic affiliations span medieval studies organizations including the Viking Society for Northern Research and Society for Medieval Archaeology.
