Dr. Mikael Mattlin is a researcher at the Global Security Research Programme of the Finnish Institute of International Affairs, an independent parliamentary research institute in Finland. He holds a doctoral degree from the University of Helsinki and has served as University Lecturer there. His key roles include Ombudsman for the Foundation for Foreign Policy Research. Specializing in Chinese politics since 1995, he is fluent in Mandarin and has held visiting scholar positions at institutions including Fudan University, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and Academia Sinica.
His research focuses on China’s global economic governance roles, EU-China relations, and Taiwan’s political transformation. Notable work includes a peer-reviewed monograph Politicized Society: The Long Shadow of Taiwan's One-Party Legacy (2011), which received acclaim in major China studies journals. His publications span topics like EU policy toward China, Chinese financial strategies, and Taiwanese political dynamics.
Dr. Mattlin’s expertise bridges international relations, comparative politics, and economic policy analysis. His research outputs emphasize strategic policy formulation, institutional frameworks in authoritarian and transitioning systems, and the interplay of domestic and international politics.
