Dr. Jonathan Sullivan is an Associate Professor in the School of Politics and International Relations at the University of Nottingham, and Director of the China Policy Institute. His research focuses on Chinese politics, political communications, cross-Strait relations, and digital politics. He holds a PhD from the University of Nottingham and has extensive experience in East Asia, including a five-year stint in Taiwan. Sullivan’s work bridges academia and media, with contributions to platforms like BBC and The China Quarterly. Current research includes editing volumes on social media in China, political communications in Taiwan, and teaching methodologies in Chinese politics. He collaborates with institutions in Maastricht and Mannheim on projects involving Chinese political discourse, Russian governance, and academic blogging.
Education: BA (First Class) in Modern Chinese Studies (University of Leeds), MAs in Asia Pacific Studies (Leeds) and Political Science (Nottingham), PhD (Nottingham, 2010). Professional roles include Senior Fellow at the China Policy Institute and ESRC-funded collaborations with the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).
Research interests span Chinese political behavior, internet governance, celebrity culture in China, and football policy. Sullivan’s publications analyze topics like Taiwan’s 2012 elections, China’s livestreaming officials, and the role of digital media in authoritarian regimes. His teaching includes courses on East Asian politics and the sociology of celebrity in China.
