Miguel David Ferrer Reynés

Miguel David Ferrer Reynés is a Full Professor in the Department of Fundamental Biology and Health Sciences at the University of the Balearic Islands, specializing in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. He teaches across multiple programs including Biochemistry, Chemistry, and various Master’s degrees in Biomedical Research, Human Nutrition, and Applied Biotechnology.

His educational background includes a degree in Biology (2004), Biochemistry (2005), and a PhD (2009), all from the University of the Balearic Islands.

His research is centered on diseases related to ectopic calcification, exploring the molecular mechanisms of pathological calcification and its interplay with inflammatory processes and oxidative stress. He also investigates bone and joint pathophysiology, contributing significantly to understanding renal lithiasis and systemic calcification disorders. His work bridges basic science and translational applications.

Dr. Ferrer Reynés leads the Renal Lithiasis and Pathological Calcification (LiRCaP) research group and is an active member of the Molecular Biology, Health Geography and One Health (MolONE) group. He has authored 50 publications in international peer-reviewed journals and secured funding as Principal Investigator in four competitive national and regional projects, as well as four collaborative projects with biotechnology and pharmaceutical firms.

He plays a key role in academic governance, serving on the Animal Experimentation Ethics Committee (CEEA), the Permanent Commission of the Biochemistry Degree Council, and the Quality Assurance Commission for the Biochemistry degree. He regularly supervises undergraduate and postgraduate theses and delivers courses in Biology, Molecular Pathology, Digestive Physiology, and Metabolic Interactions.

His research team, LiRCaP, operates as an experimental R&D&I laboratory focused on pathological calcification, while his broader involvement in MolONE reflects an interdisciplinary approach integrating molecular biology with public health and environmental health perspectives.
