Mieke Boon is a Full Professor in Philosophy of Science in Practice at the University of Twente, affiliated with the Philosophy Department under the Faculty of Behavioural, Management and Social Sciences (BMS). Her work bridges philosophy with engineering sciences, focusing on epistemology, ethics, and interdisciplinary collaboration in technological contexts.
- Education: MSc in Chemical Engineering (1987, cum laude, Twente University of Technology); PhD in Biotechnology (1996, cum laude, Technical University Delft); Philosophy studies (1988-1995, Leiden University).
Her research explores: (1) Philosophy of Science for Engineering Sciences, addressing epistemological frameworks for AI/Big Data, hybrid intelligence, and scientific modeling; (2) Science and Engineering Education, aiming to integrate philosophical insights into academic skill training for engineers. Current projects include interdisciplinary engineering education (4TU CEE) and NRO EXChange on honors program transfer.
Boon teaches in the MSc Philosophy of Science, Technology and Society (PSTS) and BSc ATLAS University College Twente programs, covering Ethics and Technology, Philosophy of Science, and related themes. She chairs the Section Theoretical Philosophy at the National Dutch Research School in Philosophy (OZSW) and co-founded the Society for Philosophy of Science in Practice (SPSP).
- Scientific Awards: NWO VIDI Grant, NWO Vici/Aspasia Grant.
She has held leadership roles in ethics committees (VU-DEC, 1997-2003), initiated the Female Faculty Network Twente (FFNT, 2004), and contributed to EPSA steering committee (2015-2019). Her work emphasizes theory-practice integration and societal relevance of academic research.
