Mieke Boon is a Full Professor of Philosophy of Science and Technology at the University of Twente, affiliated with the Faculty of Behavioral Sciences. She holds a MA in Chemical Engineering (cum laude, 1987) from Twente University of Technology and a PhD in Biotechnology (cum laude, 1996) from Technical University Delft. Her research focuses on the role of science in technology, particularly in complex systems involving interrelated physical, chemical, and biological processes.
- Education:
- MA in Chemical Engineering, Twente University of Technology (1987, cum laude)
- PhD in Biotechnology, Technical University Delft (1996, cum laude)
- Philosophy studies at Leiden University, specializing in ethics and philosophy of science
Her research project "Using science in technology: towards a philosophy of the engineering sciences" addresses the application of scientific knowledge in advanced technologies like biochemical and biomedical systems. She emphasizes the development and use of scientific theories, laws, and models in engineering sciences, highlighting neglected aspects of industrial process design.
Boon coordinated a multidisciplinary research project on bacterial sulphur removal technologies between 1996 and 2000. Her work bridges the gap between abstract philosophy and practical technological challenges, contributing to the understanding of knowledge production in complex systems.
