Professor Mick Fuller holds the academic rank of Professor in Plant Physiology at the University of Plymouth, within the School of Biological and Marine Sciences (Faculty of Science and Engineering). He has held visiting appointments at the University of Angers, France (1991), University of Southern Queensland, Australia (2006), and the Leslie Research Institute in Australia (2006). His qualifications include a BSc from the University of Leicester, a PhD in Agricultural Botany from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, and a Master of De Tao Academy - Songjiao, Shanghai China.
Research interests focus on Plant Factories and Controlled Environment Agriculture, with a strong emphasis on abiotic stress resistance in crops, genetic improvement of Brassica species, and crop physiology. He has supervised over 30 research students, including PhD candidates from institutions across the globe, addressing topics such as drought tolerance in safflower, genetic transformation for stress resistance in cauliflower, and the molecular basis of frost tolerance in wheat.
Prof. Fuller has secured significant grant funding, including projects on climate adaptation in agriculture (MAFF HORT/LINK £358,000), stress resistance evaluation in cauliflower (Pakistan High Commission £50,000), and frost resistance mechanisms in wheat (Libyan Higher Education Commission £50,000). He has organized major conferences like the 2005 Controlled Environment Users Group Annual Meeting at the Eden Project.
Prof. Fuller holds leadership roles in academic governance: former Chair of the UK Council for Graduate Education (2012-2015), Executive Committee Member (2006-2016), and Honorary Secretary (2008-2011). He served as an external examiner for numerous institutions, including Writtle College, National University of Ireland, and the University of Bradford. His professional memberships include the UK Controlled Environment Users Group and the Society for Experimental Biology.
His work bridges academic research and practical application, with a focus on sustainable agriculture and climate-resilient crop systems. Current projects emphasize controlled environment technologies for optimizing crop production under changing climatic conditions.
