Dr. Michèle Nuijten is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Methodology and Statistics at the Tilburg School of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Tilburg University. She serves as Co-chair of the Tilburg Young Academy and Faculty Ambassador for the Open Science Community Tilburg, demonstrating her commitment to advancing research practices and supporting early-career researchers.
Her research specializes in meta-science, with a focus on improving research robustness and transparency in psychology. Key areas include statistical reporting practices, p-hacking, publication bias, and replication issues. Dr. Nuijten is renowned for developing statcheck, a widely-used 'spellchecker for statistics' that identifies inconsistencies between reported test statistics and p-values.
Dr. Nuijten's recent publications reveal a consistent focus on methodological rigor in psychological research. Her work examines how statistical reporting errors occur and how tools like statcheck can improve publication quality. She investigates the impact of publication bias and questionable research practices on meta-analytic outcomes, contributing significantly to the reproducibility movement.
Her scientific recognition includes:
- Best Dissertation Award from Tilburg University
- Best Teacher Award from Tilburg University
- Young eScientist Award from the Netherlands eScience Center
As an educator, Dr. Nuijten teaches Introduction to Research Methodology to first-year psychology students, emphasizing both technical methodology skills and critical thinking. She supervises multiple PhD students including Esther Maassen, Cas Goos, and Dennis Peng on projects related to statistical reproducibility and research methodology. Her work with the Meta-Research Center provides students with opportunities to contribute to cutting-edge research on improving scientific practices.
Dr. Nuijten leads the development of statcheck at the Meta-Research Center (http://metaresearch.nl), which continues to evolve with new features to detect statistical errors across various disciplines beyond psychology.
