Michelle Royer is an Associate Professor in the Department of French and Francophone Studies at the University of Sydney, affiliated with the School of Languages and Cultures. She has dedicated over two decades to the university, including an eight-year tenure as Chair of the department. Her research focuses on 20th-century writer and filmmaker Marguerite Duras, French and World Cinema, and Francophone Oceania. She holds a PhD from UNSW and advanced degrees from the University of Paris.

Her research interests span Film Studies, Francophone Oceania, Neurosciences and cinema, and feminist film theory. Recent projects include leading a Pacific Fund-backed initiative on Francophone Oceania’s cultural expressions and co-editing Francophone Oceania Today (2024). She has published extensively on Duras’ cinematic works, exploring postcolonialism, gender, and embodiment theories.
Professor Royer teaches French cinema, visual cultures, and intellectual movements. She supervises PhD students in French, Francophone, and world cinema, including topics like diasporic cinema and film festivals. Her work bridges interdisciplinary fields, such as neurosciences in cinema and environmental concerns in Oceania.
She is actively involved in academic associations like the Société Internationale Marguerite Duras and the Modern Language Association. Her grants include funding for climate change research in French-speaking South Pacific islands and collaborative projects on global cinema.
Royer’s lab and team collaborations focus on Francophone Oceania’s artistic networks and Marguerite Duras’ legacy. She has organized international symposia on cinema, climate change, and visual sovereignty, contributing to interdisciplinary dialogues in arts and culture.
