Michelle Bloom is a Professor in the Department of Comparative Literature and French at the University of California, Riverside (UCR). She holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Brown University (1995) and a DEA in Film Studies from the Université de Paris III - la Sorbonne Nouvelle (1997). Her research focuses on Sino-French cinema, food studies, and cultural interplay between Francophone and Sinophone worlds. Key works include Contemporary Sino-French Cinema (2015) and Waxworks: A Cultural Obsession (2003). She also explores French cinema, world film, and Existentialism through courses and publications.
Her research examines themes like métissage, intertextuality, and cultural adaptation in films by directors such as Tsai Ming-liang, Hou Hsiao-hsien, and Dai Sijie. Beyond academia, she serves as a Wellness Ambassador and LGBT ally at UCR, enjoys baking madeleines, and travels extensively to France and East Asia.
