James Nathan Udden is a Professor in the Department of Cinema and Media Studies at Gettysburg College, where he has served as full-time faculty since 2003. He teaches core courses such as CINE 101, 219, 250, 251, 252, and advanced 300-level seminars. His research focuses on East Asian cinema, particularly the works of Hou Hsiao-hsien, and he co-edited The Poetics of Chinese Cinema (2016) with Gary Bettinson. His updated edition of No Man An Island: The Cinema of Hou Hsiao-hsien was published in 2018, and his forthcoming book Celluloid Diplomacy explores Iran and Taiwan's roles in global film culture.
Current research includes Media Asia: The Cultural/Economic Dynamics of the World’s Most Prolific Media-Producing Region, analyzing the intersection of cultural production and economic frameworks in Asian media industries. Contact: judden@gettysburg.edu.
