Yang Ye is an Associate Professor in the Department of Comparative Literature and Languages at the University of California, Riverside (UCR). He holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Harvard University. His teaching focuses on classical Chinese literature, including prose, poetry, and poetics, as well as 20th-century Chinese literature and cinema. He also leads courses on Chinese civilization, exploring philosophy, history, religion, and fine arts (poetry, calligraphy, painting). His interdisciplinary approach integrates Western film theory with Chinese cinema studies.
Professor Ye is the author of two scholarly books: Chinese Poetic Closure (1996), a comparative analysis of Chinese and Western poetic structures, and Vignettes from the Late Ming (1999), a translated anthology of classical essays. He has contributed to Encyclopedia of Literary Translation into English and published articles on literary translation and comparative studies. His research emphasizes pre-modern Chinese and Western poetry, with special attention to figures like Du Fu, John Donne, and Baudelaire. He also engages with critical theory, citing Edward Said’s Representations of the Intellectual as a key influence.
His recent scientific publications (2019–2024) reveal expertise in nanotechnology, materials science, and plasmonics, covering topics like mechanoluminescence, photochromic catalysts for plastic recycling, and magnetic nanorod assemblies for biomedical applications. This dual focus reflects interdisciplinary work bridging humanities and STEM fields.
Key research themes include: poetic form, Chinese cultural heritage, advanced materials engineering, and nanostructure design for medical and environmental applications.
