Michelle O'Toole is an Associate Research Fellow at the Alfred Deakin Institute for Citizenship and Globalisation, Deakin University. Her research focuses on sociocultural anthropology, with expertise in community engagement, cross-cultural collaboration, and co-design methodologies. She holds a PhD from La Trobe University and a First Class Honours degree from Monash University. O'Toole is a Fellow of the Australian Anthropological Society and affiliated with the Association of Social Anthropologists of Aotearoa/New Zealand.
Her work examines how diverse groups build trust through participatory approaches, particularly in multicultural settings. Current projects include studies on rebuilding trust between governments and multicultural communities via co-design frameworks. She has contributed to grants such as the CRIS 2.0 initiative ($1.018 million), exploring resilient and inclusive societies.
Key research themes include decolonization, academic precarity during the pandemic, and language revitalization in Aotearoa New Zealand. O'Toole's publications span book chapters and peer-reviewed articles, emphasizing ethnographic methods and applied anthropology.
