Dr. Michelle Lam is an Associate Professor in the Curriculum and Pedagogy Department at Brandon University's Faculty of Education, holding the Canada Research Chair in Rural Community-Based Education for Reconciliation until 2030. Previously, she served as Director of BU CARES (2019–2025), a center focused on Indigenous, rural, and remote education. Her work emphasizes anti-racism, social justice, and innovative pedagogies such as arts-based research. Key projects include the Umbay Nagamon reconciliation circles, the Anti-Racism Film Project, and the Refugee Journeys board game.
Her educational background includes a PhD from the University of Manitoba (2016–2019), master’s from Providence Theological Seminary, and bachelor’s from Ambrose University College. She has taught at Brandon University, University of Manitoba, and various institutions globally, including Vietnam. Lam has secured over $1.5M in grants, including major SSHRC funding for projects addressing rural homelessness and anti-racism education.
Lam’s research spans 15+ years, with over 30 publications on topics like climate justice pedagogy, rural integration, and digital literacy. She supervises postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and research teams involving filmmakers, educators, and community members. Awards include the 2021 International Excellence in Scholarship Award and multiple Trudeau Foundation scholarships. Her service includes roles on university committees, provincial policy groups, and community initiatives like the Brandon Mayor’s Book Club.
