Katharine Lam serves as Senior Lecturer in Piano at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, Birmingham City University, where she has been a core faculty member since 2008. She also holds an ambassadorship with The Incorporated Society of Musicians since 2017. Her distinguished career spans performance as recitalist, concerto soloist, chamber musician, and accompanist alongside dedicated music education work.
Lam's educational foundation was built at Birmingham Conservatoire under Malcolm Wilson, where she graduated with First Class Honours and the highest performance award: the Diploma in Professional Studies in Music Performance. Her training included specialized work in contemporary techniques through the Integra project.
Her professional focus centers on piano performance and pedagogy with significant contributions to contemporary music interpretation. Lam actively premieres new works and explores live electronic integration through the Integra project. Her chamber music collaborations, particularly the piano duo with Duncan Honeybourne, demonstrate exceptional artistry across diverse repertoire from Baroque to avant-garde compositions. The Ballet Piano Placement Scheme she oversees bridges piano performance with dance accompaniment.
Lam's recognitions include:
- Diploma in Professional Studies in Music Performance (highest performance award)
- Honorary Membership, Royal Birmingham Conservatoire (2011)
- Ambassadorship, The Incorporated Society of Musicians (2017)
In her educational role, Lam mentors undergraduate and postgraduate students while developing specialized pedagogy curricula. Her Ballet Piano Placement Scheme provides unique industry experience through partnerships with Elmhurst School of Dance and Birmingham Royal Ballet. Lam extends her educational impact through nationwide adjudication work and community outreach initiatives that bring music to diverse audiences.
Though not leading a formal research laboratory, Lam's collaborative projects define her creative output. Her piano duo work with Duncan Honeybourne has produced internationally broadcast recordings, including the 2017 EM Records release of Andrew Downes' Sonata for Two Pianos. Her involvement with the Integra project continues to advance live electronic music performance practices within contemporary classical contexts.
