Dr. Michelle J. Pinkard serves as Associate Professor and Department Chair in the Department of Languages, Literature, and Philosophy at Tennessee State University's College of Arts & Sciences. Her career bridges academic scholarship and creative practice with deep engagement in African American cultural narratives.
Her educational foundation includes:
- Ph.D. from Arizona State University
- M.A. from Morgan State University
- B.A. from Paul Quinn College
Dr. Pinkard's research centers on intersections of African American literature, gender studies, modernism, and creative writing. She investigates identity's impact on creative processes through dual lenses: scholarly analysis of Harlem Renaissance maternal poetics and cultural artifacts like funeral programs, alongside her own poetry exploring race, gender, and personal history. Her work reveals how marginalized voices navigate literary traditions.
Analysis of her 2004-2018 publications shows sustained focus on African American women writers across scholarly and creative outputs. Scholarly works dissect gendered erasure in Gwendolyn Brooks while poetry collections examine identity through intimate lenses—demonstrating how academic and artistic practices mutually inform each other in exploring Black cultural expression.
Her recognition includes:
- 2016 Tenure Track Teacher of the Year (College of Liberal Arts)
- 2016 Faculty Award nomination for Exemplary Service-Learning
- Back-to-back Outstanding Service Learning Project Awards (2016, 2018)
Dr. Pinkard mentors through the Soul Fire Poetry Group and service-learning initiatives that connect classroom learning with community needs. Her award-winning projects demonstrate commitment to experiential education where students apply literary skills to real-world contexts while developing cultural competence.
She founded the 'I Want to Write Initiative' which cultivates campus-wide creative expression through workshops and collaborative projects, extending her scholarly mission into tangible community-building that supports emerging writers across disciplines.
