Michelle Hsiang

Dr. Michelle Hsiang is an Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology & Biostatistics at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), with a secondary appointment in Pediatrics. She serves as Director of Research for the Malaria Elimination Initiative and Director of the Center for Global Infectious and Parasitic Diseases at the Institute for Global Health Sciences. Her work focuses on malaria epidemiology in low-endemic settings, particularly evaluating interventions like mass drug administration and novel diagnostic tools. She has conducted research in sub-Saharan Africa, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America, with active studies in Peru and Tanzania.

Education: Stanford University (B.A., Human Biology), Baylor College of Medicine (M.D.), UCSF (Pediatrics residency and Pediatric Infectious Diseases fellowship), and London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (MSc in Epidemiology).

Research Interests: Malaria elimination strategies, epidemiology of low-density infections, and global health equity. She emphasizes clinical trials for drug and vector control interventions, as well as improving surveillance systems in malaria-elimination settings.

Key Projects: Principal Investigator of NIH/NIAID-funded trials in Peru and Tanzania, and leader of studies on reactive mass drug administration and malaria diagnostics. She also contributes to global initiatives like the Asia Pacific Malaria Elimination Network (APMEN).

Awards: Chan-Zuckerberg Biohub Investigator, WomenLift Health Leadership Award, and the Horchow Family Endowed Scholar in Pediatrics.
