Michelle Gilbert is an Assistant Teaching Professor in the Department of Biology at the Pennsylvania State University. Her academic background includes a PhD in Organismic and Evolutionary Biology from the University of Massachusetts Amherst (2017–2022), followed by post-doctoral training at Penn State University (2022–2024).
- Education:
- PhD, Organismic and Evolutionary Biology, University of Massachusetts Amherst (2017–2022)
- Post-doctoral training in Tom Stewart’s lab at Penn State University (2022–2024)
Her research focuses on evolutionary biology, developmental biology, and anatomy, particularly in the context of craniofacial morphology and ecological adaptation in fish. She investigates how environmental factors influence morphological plasticity and genetic underpinnings of form. Key themes include developmental constraints, cichlid jaw evolution, and the interplay between genetics and environment in shaping phenotypes.
Michelle’s art-science work has been recognized, including winning the FASEB BioArt Contest in 2020 and 2018. Her scientific art explores anatomical structures and has been exhibited globally, blending biological research with artistic expression.
In teaching, she instructs courses like Biological Inquiry and Analysis, Zoology, and Evolution and Development (EvoDevo). Her work bridges academic research, education, and public engagement through science-art collaborations.
