Kara E Powder

Kara E Powder is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Clemson University, part of the College of Science. Her research focuses on understanding the genomic and developmental origins of diversity, particularly in craniofacial evolution and disease. She leads the Powder Lab, located in the Life Sciences Building, where her team uses cichlid fishes as model organisms to study genetic and epigenetic mechanisms driving phenotypic variation.

Dr. Powder holds a Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics and Genomics from Washington University in St. Louis (2011) and a B.S. in Biology from Case Western Reserve University (2004). Her work integrates quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping, genomics, morphometric analysis, and experimental embryology to explore how genetic variation influences craniofacial development and adaptation in cichlids.

Her research emphasizes the evolutionary and ecological significance of craniofacial diversity, particularly in East African Rift Lake cichlids. Key topics include epigenetic regulation of form, genetic basis of pigmentation patterns, and the role of neural crest cells in microevolutionary variation. Recent studies highlight species-specific responses to chromatin modifications and links between developmental trajectories and craniofacial sexual dimorphism.
