Michelle Cheyne is a Professor in the Department of Global Languages and Cultures at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. She holds a PhD in French from Rutgers University (2003) and an LLM in Public International Law from Utrecht University (2021), with earlier studies at Université Lumière-Lyon 2 and the University of Pennsylvania.

Her research focuses on French and European theater, poetry, and narrative performance, particularly examining themes of migration, human rights, and colonial memory. She has published extensively on melodrama, Balzacian adaptations, and contemporary representations of migrant experiences in European theater.
Notable publications include critical editions of French melodramatic works and analyses of migration narratives in theatrical contexts, such as her 2021 study of Pixerécourt's Le chien de Montargis and her 2020 exploration of Lampedusa migrant representations in Forum Modernes Theater.
