Michelle Bumatay is an Assistant Professor of French and French graduate adviser at Florida State University's Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics (College of Arts and Sciences). She specializes in African Francophone literature, visual culture, and contemporary France. Her research focuses on postcolonial studies, migration studies, and comics/media analysis. She holds a Ph.D. from UCLA and was awarded the 2015 Lawrence R. Schehr Memorial Award for her work on colonial narrative frameworks.
Her book On Black Bandes Dessinées and Transcolonial Power (2025) examines Black artists' comics in French contexts. Notable publications include analyses of Senegalese soldiers in WWI comics and African comic festivals. Bumatay organizes the Winthrop-King Institute’s Global Africas series and actively contributes to interdisciplinary discussions on Francophone visual culture.
