Thérèse De Raedt is a Professor in the World Languages and Cultures department at the University of Utah (since 2023). With a Ph.D. in French Literature and Critical Theory from UC Davis, her work bridges Francophone studies, postcolonial theory, and cross-cultural analysis. ORCID: 0000-0002-6198-5873.
- Primary research: Francophone African cinema, littoral spaces as postcolonial contact zones, cultural production in Senegal, and identity politics.
- Teaching: 19th-century French studies, Francophone cultures, visual-textual analysis, and contemporary African topics.
- Community engagement: Co-founder and consultant for the New Face of Africa Film Series (2007–present).
Research Themes:
Her scholarship interrogates how beaches in Francophone African contexts symbolize historical and contemporary tensions—colonial legacies, migration crises, and socio-political asymmetries. She argues that these spaces, often romanticized as leisure sites, reveal deeper narratives of global inequality and resistance through films by Moussa Sène Absa and others. Her upcoming book Taking the Beach: Figuring Francophone Postcolonial Littoral Spaces expands this framework.
Publication Trends:
Recent works analyze Senegalese cinema (2025), migration documentaries (2021), and Mediterranean border narratives (2017). Themes include visual-textual synergy, gendered resistance, and decolonizing spatial representation. Sub-fields emphasize coastal geographies, intercultural identity, and cinematic political activism.
