Michelle Banfield

Michelle Banfield is a Professor at the Australian National University (ANU), leading the Lived Experience Research Unit within the Centre for Mental Health Research. She holds a PhD and has expertise in mental health policy, consumer and carer involvement in research, and suicide prevention. As Co-Director of the ALIVE National Centre for Mental Health Research Translation, she focuses on translating research into practical healthcare solutions. Her work includes evaluating innovative mental health interventions and advocating for ethical research practices.

Education: BA(Hons), BSc, PhD.

Research Interests: Effective mental health services, bipolar disorder management, mental health policy, suicide prevention, and co-creation of research with lived experience stakeholders.

Recent articles emphasize co-design methods, policy translation, and suicide prevention strategies. She has received prestigious fellowships, including the ARC DECRA and MRFF awards. Michelle chairs ANU’s Human Research Ethics Committee and co-leads national initiatives like the Co-Creating Safe Spaces project.
